Welcome to the Sons of Norway in Colorado Springs! We welcome everyone who has an interest in Scandinavia or Scandinavian culture. You do not need to be of Norwegian descent in order to belong.
Mark Nelson will be presenting on the 99th Battalion (separate) aka "Viking Battalion" which was comprised of Norwegian Americans during WWII to assist in the liberation of Norway from Nazi Germany.
Mark's great uncle Lars L. Larson was a member of the 99th who trained as ski troopers at Camp Hale, CO prior to being deployed in Normandy, June 22, 1944 and fighting their way across Europe, including the Battle of the Bulge and eventually arriving in Norway to escort Nazi soldiers out of Norway.
Mark will share information on Lars, his family who emigrated from Ål, Hallingdal, Norway and he will have a large display of items brought back from the war in Lars's Army footlocker.
